Suzi Kory Bio
Canadian country-pop artist Suzi Kory, currently recording her latest release with guitarist Brent Woods (Sebastian Bach, Vince Neil, John Waite, KISS), switched directions after her 2017 rock EP, Spellcasting, made with The Trews’ guitarist John Angus Macdonald.
Although she initially intended to write a rock album, her songwriting naturally progressed towards a country sound. Both Suzi and Brent agreed this was a more genuine sound and showcased softer, more vulnerable, vocals suited to the style of music they were writing.
The first single “The Secret Garden” was released this past fall, accompanied by a music video recently shot in Malibu. The follow-up single/video, “Pretty Little Things,” was released Jan. 19 , and was also shot in L.A. at Will Rogers Beach and in a rehearsal facility.
“’Pretty Little Things’ is the story of growing up with a dream, only to have life take you down a completely different road,” says Suzi. “It’s also about the beautiful things we discover in life when we find our way back and have the courage to follow that dream.”
Born in the Middle East, raised in Canada, and a world traveller for work and music, Suzi has a collection of life experiences to draw from for her songwriting. Having spend several years abroad, it was after her move back to North America and a fateful meeting with her idol and inspiration Axl Rose that the fire to write and perform was reignited.
“My birthday was coming up and friends started asking what I wanted. Number one was meeting the man I had idolized most of my life,” Suzi recounts. “I flew to LA and drove to Axl’s home in Malibu only to find him walking near his house. We had a short conversation and he agreed to a photo. As I drove away, I thought if I could manifest something this crazy, then pursuing my lifelong dream of performing was possible.”
In 2017, Suzi began writing and recording her first EP, Spellcasting, with The Trews’ MacDonald. She released it in 2017, supporting it with a string of shows, including opening slots for LA Guns in Toronto and LA at the legendary Whiskey a Go-Go. Her songs received airplay across Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, UK, the Middle East, Brazil and New Zealand.
The EP would also take her as far as Brasilia, Brazil where she would be the only Canadian artist, and one of three international acts, performing at Festival CoMA. There she caught the attention of Indie Week founder and fellow Canadian Daryl Hurs, who invited her to showcase during Indie Week back in Toronto.
Following several live performances, Suzi was ready to begin writing and recording a full-length album.
“Earlier in the year my photographer and friend, Igor Vidyashev, introduced me to Brent. I had come to admire his work, valued his advice and respected his work ethic so it came time to start writing and recording again, it was a clear decision to work with him. During the two weeks I spent in LA, Brent continuously challenged me in trying to find my sound. It was during this period of musical self-discovery that we realized the album was organically heading in the direction of country.”
